Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) food product labeling turned in to the Law
Effective July 29th, 2016, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) food product bill (S.764) signed by president Obama into law. Under this law all food products containing GMO are subject to mandatory labeling in one of the three possible ways as listed following:
- Through disclosure on the product packaging;
- As a U. S. Department of Agriculture, USDA-backed symbol on the product signifying GMO content;
- Via an electronic code accessible by smartphone;
Now the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has two years to complete rulemaking process under this new rule. This activity is expected to be highly challenged as potentially different stakeholders may try to influence USDA’s regulatory decision, on choosing the symbol and/or the threshold amount of GMO content a product must contain to trigger such labeling.
